The Heartwork Collective (formerly the Indigenous Research Methods and Learners Network) is a network of Indigenous and non-Indigenous early career and community-based researchers who use Indigenous research methods. We seek to advance these approaches into environmental and natural science spaces by honouring research that comes from the heart.
What is heartwork?
We recognize heartwork as an Indigenous-centered term that describes work that is deeply connected to personal values, community well-being, and social-ecological transformation.

The Heartwork Collectives goals are to:
Each year a new cohort of academics and community members is added to the Collective. Based on the cohorts’ strengths, experiences, and capacities, each group is responsible for visioning objectives that will contribute to the Collectives broader goals.
- To further the use of Indigenous research methods in environmental and natural science spaces (while recognizing the value of interdisciplinary work) by building awareness, capacity, and understanding.
- To empower Indigenous and non-Indigenous practitioners' using Indigenous research methods (specifically early career researchers and community-based learners), through the creation of supportive spaces.
- To support and create learning opportunities with Indigenous communities through connecting them with collaborators and Heartwork Collective members.
